Lent 2020
A Daily Prayer Guide

Daily Prayer in Lent

O Lord, open our lips.

All:          and our mouth shall proclaim your praise.

Come, let us worship Christ our Lord and our King.

All:          He was lifted up on the cross for our salvation.

All:          Glory to the Father and to the Son

and to the Holy Spirit:

as it was in the beginning, is now,

and shall be for ever.

1 Hear my prayer, O Lord, and in your faithfulness give ear to my

supplications; * answer me in your righteousness.

2 Enter not into judgement with your servant, *

for in your sight shall no one living be justified.

3 For the enemy has pursued me, crushing my life to the ground, *

making me sit in darkness like those long dead.

4 My spirit faints within me; *

my heart within me is desolate.

5 I remember the time past; I muse upon all your deeds; *

I consider the works of your hands.

6 I stretch out my hands to you; *

my soul gasps for you like a thirsty land.

7 O Lord, make haste to answer me; my spirit fails me; *

hide not your face from me

lest I be like those who go down to the Pit.

8 Let me hear of your loving-kindness in the morning,

for in you I put my trust; *

show me the way I should walk in, for I lift up my soul to you.

9 Deliver me, O Lord, from my enemies, *

for I flee to you for refuge.

10 Teach me to do what pleases you, for you are my God; *

let your kindly spirit lead me on a level path.

11 Revive me, O Lord, for your name’s sake; *

for your righteousness’ sake, bring me out of trouble.

12 In your faithfulness, slay my enemies,

and destroy all the adversaries of my soul, *

for truly I am your servant.                                                                                   Psalm 143 CW

All:            Glory to the Father and to the Son

and to the Holy Spirit:

as it was in the beginning, is now,

and shall be for ever.

The Word of God

Readings are taken from the ‘daily’ sections of the following pages.

A Period of Silence

This form of prayer may be used during Lent.

Father, you have given us the freedom to come before you in

prayer through your Son, Jesus Christ.

Hear us as we say:

R/. Lord, give us hope.

That by sharing in heart and mind in the passion of Christ, and by

works of penance we may come to glory of resurrection. R/

That people who are struggling with their hopes and desires will be

strengthened in the way of holiness. R/

That we may know more fully the forgiveness that is ours in Christ

and may be forgiving of others. R/

That by works of charity we may bring blessings to others. R/

That all who are anxious, lonely, or in pain may know the comfort

of your Holy Spirit. R/

That those who have died may come to know the fullness of life in

your Son. R/

That the whole creation might be brought to fulfilment in your

eternal kingdom. R/

This form of prayer may be used during Passiontide

(the final two weeks of Lent)

Holy God, as we stand with Christ in his suffering we pray for all

countries where there is war, hatred and bitterness; give

courage and strength to those who seek peace, and bring

reconciliation to those torn apart and divided.

Through your endless love,

R/. Your will be done.

Your Son poured out his life and so brought us reconciliation and

peace. We pray for the church which he has established, for unity

world-wide … Give your Church the humility and the love always to do your will and bring you glory. R/.

We pray for people who are casualties of the anger and hatred, the

callousness and carelessness of others: may the power of the cross bring them healing and peace. R/.

Have mercy on those who are ill, those awaiting medical

appointments or treatment, and all who suffer on behalf of others; may they draw strength from the life-giving cross. R/.

Such amazing love, fills our hearts with hope and faith. We offer

ourselves in humility and trust that we may serve you and love one

another. R/.

Open prayer may be offered and silence is kept.

The Collect of the day or the following prayer is said

O God, who in your deep wisdom has appointed this season of penitence, fasting and devotion for our good, grant us the humility of repentance and the perseverance of faith, that we may be faithful and obedient to you in all things; and glorify your Son our Saviour Jesus Christ.

All:           Amen.

The Lord's Prayer is said.  Our Father...

The Conclusion

May the cross of Christ be our strength and our guide.

All:           Amen.
