The Feast of St Patrick, 2020
Friends in Christ
Today, the archbishops of the Church of England issued a letter to all clergy and church wardens insisting that all public worship must be suspended until further notice. Therefore; there will be no formal, public worship on Sundays or any other day during the week as normally publicised. Neither will Lent groups, youth groups and other church-sponsored meetings be able to take place.
This does not mean that the church will close down. Remember, as disciples of Christ, we do not “go to church”, rather we ARE the Church – the living Body of Christ. At this time of challenge, we are being called to be the Church in different and creative ways.
Please involve yourselves in a rhythm of regular prayer. Resources are attached to the email message with this letter to you. Prayer and scripture resources are also available in church, which is open during the day (9 am to 6 pm) for private prayer and reflection. (Please remember to observe the hygiene and social distancing requirements at all times.) We commend to you the prayers of table blessing, which you may wish to share as you break bread and pour wine around your family table.
We shall be compiling a team of Communicators to keep in touch with the more vulnerable members of our congregation, who are housebound, live alone or may be “self-isolating” at this time. If you wish to volunteer, please contact the clergy or wardens
This is turning out to be a Lent like no other we have ever experienced. Following Jesus’ example, as we find ourselves experiencing time in isolation in this wilderness moment, let us remember that we still belong together in the life of the risen Christ and if we spend our time in prayerful reflection with the holy scriptures – we will become, even more, the beating heart of prayer and compassion; the hands and voices of Christ’s love in this community of Horfield.
The clergy will continue to say Morning and Evening Prayer and offer Mass for you, your families and neighbours and for the wider world daily throughout this crisis.
With every blessing
Fr David and Mthr Hilary
