Sacraments
The Sacrament of Baptism (Christening)
is available for all who desire it. We do not lay down any preconditions for Baptism, since it is primarily a gift of God. But we hope that those who have arranged a baptism will want to attend church a few times before it happens, to get the feel of the church and to get to know some people here. They may also wish to attend a Zeta course.
Baptisms normally happen on the first Sunday of each month, either at the 10am Parish Mass, or afterwards at 11.45. Those desiring baptism for themselves, or for a child, are asked to come to the church at 6.00pm any Saturday.
Weddings
can be arranged at any time of year except for Holy Saturday (the day before Easter). At least one of the couple should normally live in the parish; and at least one should normally have been baptised. Weddings can be booked at the Saturday 6.00 p.m. surgery in church, when a deposit of £100 is normally requested, and arrangements can be discussed. Nearer the time, all couples are invited to a Marriage Preparation Conference (10 a.m. – 2.00 p.m. on a Saturday): this gives the opportunity to think about the meaning of Christian marriage, to ask questions, and to finalise arrangements.
Banns
must be called on 3 consecutive Sundays in your parish church (es) no more than 3 months prior to the date of your wedding (i.e. if you live in separate parishes arrange for them to be read in each). It is your responsibility to arrange this. You must ensure that any Banns certificates from other parishes are given to the clergy before your wedding day, as you cannot be married without them.
Funerals
Requests for funerals are normally made to us through the undertaker in the first place. We are always willing to take funerals, either in church or at a crematorium or cemetery, for anyone who has been connected with the church or who lived in the parish. We strongly recommend a funeral in church for someone who has been a regular worshipper here, and a Requiem Mass for those who have been regular communicants.
The Sacrament of Penance (Confession or Reconciliation)
is offered at particular times of year, or at any time by arrangement with one of the priests. It is a wonderful opportunity to experience God’s forgiveness at first hand.
Healing
The Laying On of Hands for healing is normally offered on the final Sunday of each month, in the Lady Chapel immediately after the giving of Communion. It is also available on request, as is the Sacrament of Unction (anointing).
