Order for a Mass of Requiem

The Gathering

Opening sentence:

Grant her eternal rest, O Lord: and let light perpetual shine upon her.
You, O God, are praised in Sion, and to you shall the vow be performed in Jerusalem: you who hear the prayer, to you shall all flesh come.
Grant her eternal rest, O Lord: and let light perpetual shine upon her.
Grace, mercy and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ be with you. And also with you.

Kyrie Eleison is said:

Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy.
Christ, have mercy. Christ, have mercy.
Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy.

1. Liturgy of the Word

The Collect is read:

Lord God, the glory of believers and the light of the just, whose blessed Son redeemed us by dying and rising again to new life: grant to your servant the joy and blessings of his risen life, in which she put her faith; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord.....

First reading: Romans 14.7-12

All stand to greet the Gospel:

Alleluia, alleluia! Alleluia, alleluia! or in Lent
Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ!
I am the Resurrection and the Life, says the Lord: whoever lives and believes in me will never die.
Alleluia, alleluia! or in Lent
Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ!

Gospel: John 10.11-16

A time for reflection. Prayers of Intercession are said, with the responses:

Lord, hear us. Lord, graciously hear us. and
Rest eternal grant unto her, O Lord And let light perpetual shine upon her.

2. Liturgy of the Sacrament

Offertory prayer:

We offer you, Lord, sacrifices of prayer and praise; receive them for the souls of those whom we today recall: make them, O Lord, to pass from death to life, as you promised of old to Abraham and his seed.

Eucharistic Prayer 1, with this proper preface:

And now we give you thanks because through him you have given us the hope of a glorious resurrection; so that, although death comes to us all, yet we rejoice in the promise of eternal life; for to your faithful people life is changed, not taken away; and, when our mortal flesh is laid aside, an everlasting dwelling place is made ready for us in heaven.

The Agnus Dei is said:

Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world, grant them rest. Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world, grant them rest. Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world, grant them rest eternal.

Jesus is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. Blessed are those who are called to his supper.
Lord, I am not worthy to receive you, but only say the word, and I shall be healed.

3. The Going Out

May eternal light shine on them, O Lord, with all your saints for ever, for you are rich in mercy. Give them eternal rest, O Lord, and let light perpetual shine upon them for ever, for you are rich in mercy.

Lord God, your Son Jesus Christ gave us the sacrament of his body and blood to guide us on our pilgrim way to your kingdom. May N, who shared in this Eucharist, come to the banquet of life he has prepared for us; who lives and reigns for ever and ever. Amen

At the end:

The Lord be with you. And also with you.
May they rest in peace. Amen.
