1. The story of the first human disobedience.
And they heard the voice of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God amongst the trees of the garden. And the Lord God called to Adam, and said to him, Where are you? And he said, I heard your voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself. And he said, Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten of the tree, of which I commanded you not to eat? And the man said, The woman whom you gave to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat. And the Lord God said to the woman, What is this that you have done? And the woman said, The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat. And the Lord God said to the serpent, Because you have done this, you are cursed above all animals, and above every beast of the field; upon your belly you shall go, and dust you shall eat all the days of your life. And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her seed; it shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise its heel.
(Genesis 3.8-15)
2. God promises that his kingdom will be restored by his firstborn Son.
You spoke in a vision to your holy one, and said: I have set the crown upon one that is mighty, I have exalted one chosen out of the people. My faithfulness and my mercy shall be with him: and in my name shall his horn be exalted. I will set his hand in the sea: and his right hand in the rivers. He shall cry to me, You are my father: my God, and the rock of my salvation. Also I will make him my firstborn: higher than the kings of the earth. My mercy will I keep for him for evermore: and my covenant shall stand fast with him. His seed also will I make to endure for ever: and his throne as the sun before me. It shall be established for ever as the moon: and as a faithful witness in heaven.
(Psalm 89.19,24-37)
3. The prophet in exile foresees the coming of the glory of the Lord.
Arise, shine; for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord is risen upon you. For behold, the darkness shall cover the earth, and gross darkness the people: but the Lord shall arise upon you, and his glory shall be seen upon you. And the nations shall come to your light, and kings to the brightness of your rising. Lift up your eyes round about, and see: they all gather themselves together, they come to you; your sons shall come from far, and your daughters shall be nursed at your side. Then you shall see, and be radiant; and your heart shall fear, and be enlarged; because the abundance of the sea shall be brought to you, the wealth of the nations shall come to you. The multitude of camels shall cover you, the dromedaries of Midian and Ephah. All they from Sheba shall come: they shall bring gold and frankincense, and they shall show forth the praises of the Lord. The sun shall no longer be your light by day, neither for brightness shall the moon give you light by night: but the Lord shall be to you an everlasting light, and your God shall be your glory.
(Isaiah 60.1-6, 19)
4. Mary receives the Good News of the coming of Christ.
In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, to a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin’s name was Mary. And the angel came in to her, and said, Hail, you who are highly favoured, the Lord is with you: blessed are you among women. And when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and cast in her mind what manner of salutation this should be. And the angel said to her, Fear not, Mary: for you have found favour with God. And behold, you shall conceive in your womb, and bring forth a son, and shall call his name Jesus. He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give him the throne of his father David: and he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end. Then said Mary to the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man? And the angel answered and said to her, The Holy Spirit shall come upon you, and the power of the Most High shall overshadow you: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of you shall be called the Son of God. And Mary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to your word. And the angel departed from her.
(Luke 1.26-38)
5. The Good News of Christ’s birth is brought to Joseph.
Now the birth of Jesus Christ took place in this way. When his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child by the Holy Spirit. Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing to make her a public example, was minded to put her away privily. But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, Joseph, son of David, fear not to take Mary as your wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. And she shall bring forth a son, and you shall call his name Jesus: for he shall save his people from their sins. Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.
(Matthew 1.18-23)
6. Jesus is born as a homeless stranger.
And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus, that all the world should be taxed. (And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria). And all went to be taxed, every one into their own city. And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem (because he was of the house and lineage of David); to be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child. And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered. And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.
(Luke 2.1-7)
7. The shepherds are caught up in the worship of the Christ child.
And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For to you is born this day in the city of David a saviour, which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign to you: you shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host, praising God, and saying, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will to all people. And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even up to Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord has made known to us. And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger. And when they had seen it, they made known all around the saying which had been told them concerning the child. And all who heard it wondered at those things which were told them by the shepherds. But Mary kept all these things, and pondered them in her heart. And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, as it had been told them.
(Luke 2.8-20)
8. Foreign diviners are led to Christ by the wisdom of their own religion.
Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came Magi from the east to Jerusalem, saying, Where is he that is born king of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him. When Herod the king had heard these things, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him. And when he had gathered all the chief priests and scribes of the people together, he demanded of them where Christ should be born. And they said to him, In Bethlehem of Judaea: for thus it is written by the prophet, “And you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are not the least among the princes of Judah: for out of you shall come a governor, that shall rule my people Israel.” Then Herod, when he had privily called the Magi, inquired of them diligently what time the star appeared. And he sent them to Bethlehem, and said, Go, and search diligently for the young child; and when you have found him, bring me word again, that I may come and worship him also. When they had heard the king, they departed; and lo, the star, which they saw in the east, went before them, till it came and stood over where the young child was. When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy. And when they had come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented to him gifts; gold, and frankincense, and myrrh. And being warned of God in a dream that they should not return to Herod, they departed into their own country another way.
(Matthew 2.1-12)
9. St John’s account of the birth of Christ.
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not anything made. That which was made in him was life; and the life was the light of all people. And the light shines in the darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not. There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all through him might believe. He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of the Light. The true Light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world. He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not. He came to his own, and his own received him not. But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the children of God, even to them that believe on his name: which were born, not of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only-begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.
(John 1.1-14)
