History of our church - Rev'd Samuel Seyer M.A.
Perpetual Curate Incumbent
1813-1828
Previously Curate at Westbury-on-Trym, he was the foremost Bristol historian of his period and lived in Berkeley Square, Clifton. In 1814 he petitioned for funds to build a Parsonage House in Horfield Parish but it was not until 1825 that the present rectory was built at a cost of £1050 – however, it was never occupied by Rev'd Samuel Seyer and a record suggests that he was fined £12 by the Bishop under and Act of Parliament dated 1804 for not residing within his Parish!
A memorial tablet at one time existed in St. Mary's Church in Shirehampton which recorded his death in 1831 at the age of 73.
The date of the original drawing of the church from which this copy is taken is unknown, nevertheless, it shows the mediaeval church as it existed in the time of the Rev'd Samuel Seyer before 1831.
